A radioactive source is a known quantity of a radionuclide which emits ionizing radiation; typically one or more of the radiation types gamma rays, alpha particles, beta particles, and neutron radiation.. Sources can be used for irradiation, where the radiation performs a significant ionising function on a target material, or as a radiation metrology source, which is used for the calibration The neutron energy spectrum of an 241Am-Li radionuclide source has been measured in a low scatter room at the National Physical Laboratory, using a variety of spectrometers namely: a Bonner sphere set, a 3He ionisation chamber, and a set of hydrogen recoil proportional counters. Calculations with the MCNP transport code have been used to explain some of the features seen in the spectrum. The radioactive source in most smoke detectors is 241am, which has a half life of 432 years.

Gamma ray spectra of strong 241Am sources may reveal information about the source composition as there may be other radioactive nuclides such as progeny and radioactive impurities present. In this work the possibility to use gamma spectrometry to identify inherent signatures in 241Am sources in order to differentiate sources from each other, is investigated. The studied signatures are age, i.e 241 Am is naturally radioactive. It decays by emitting alpha particles of about 5 MeV (8.01 x 10-13 Joules) energy.
To determine density, the cesium-137 source emits gamma radiation into the test material. The neutron energy spectrum of an 241Am-Li radionuclide source has been measured in a low scatter room at the National Physical Laboratory, using a variety of spectrometers namely: a Bonner sphere
Because of the low penetration of alpha radiation, Americium-241 only poses a health risk when ingested or inhaled. Older samples of plutonium containing plutonium-241 contain a buildup of 241 Am. A chemical removal of americium from reworked plutonium (e.g.

Am-241 found in the environment is in the form of microscopic dust. 241Am (Americium) Americium is a man made radioactive isotope, and is commonly found in smoke detectors. The source is an alpha emitter, and in the decay process it also kicks out a gamma at 59.6KeV. This is a typical gamma spectrum from Americium, as you can see, the tall peak at 59.6 KeV is very obvious and over powers everything else, it also has a gamma at 26.3KeV which is sometimes visible to the left of the tall peak. in smoke detectors as an ionization source. How does americium-241 change in the environment? Americium-241 is formed in the environment by the decay of plutonium contamination from nuclear weapons production and testing.
